On Wednesday, September 5th I witnessed 9 willing participants ingest approximately 60 coney dogs in a matter of 10 minutes…..intrigued?
American Coney Island held their 2nd Annual Coney Dog Eating Contest – with proceeds providing culinary arts scholarships for DPS’ Golightly Career and Technical Center students. The Golightly students were on hand, keeping a watchful on how many coneys the contestants ate & covering the event.
4 celebrity judges were also in attendance;
Ken Cockrel, city council member and former Detroit mayor,
Rick Mahorn, one of the the original Detroit Piston’s ‘Bad Boys’
Katherine Yung, Free Press business writer and co-author of Coney Detroit
Shane Carson, radio host – wowShaneRadio.com
The winner of the contest will hold the title of ‘Coney Dog Eating Champion’, receive this Championship Belt and free coneys for a full year! Contestants were challenged to eat as many full coneys as possible (yep – chili, mustard & onions on every one) within 10 minutes and to keep everything down for 60 seconds after the time limit concluded.
Here is a look at the tray of coneys set before each contestant:
The ten minute countdown begins……..
And they kept eating and eating while the crowd cheered them on……
Rick Mahorn personally urges the contestants on to victory. And the winner IS……
…..DeShaun ‘Whip Dog’ Whipple, who decimated last year’s record of 8 1/2 coneys by eating ELEVEN coneys in 10 minutes!!!! (and, just for good measure, grabbed one more coney to eat while he was interviewed)
Big congrats to DeShaun & American Coney Island for an amazing event benefitting a wonderful group of young adults!!!
