Walking into a brewpub, the food can be hit or miss. In some cases, it might even be BYOF (bring your own food). At Great Baraboo, equal attention is paid to food and beer.
We’re at a brewery, right? Let’s start with the beer. The seasonal offering (inexplicably) is Dennis’ OK Oatmeal Stout. Don’t get me wrong, I love a hearty oatmeal stout in the late fall into winter. Summer is time for lighter wheat beers and the like. However! Given the fare on Baraboo’s menu, the oatmeal stout makes sense. Stouts stand up against burgers, ribs and chili – much of the food on Baraboo’s menu is of the comfort food ilk, so even during the dog days of summer, the oatmeal stout works.
If you’re sipping on the stout, don’t pass up the Pretzel Burger. Earthy sautéed mushrooms and provolone cheese cover a half-pound burger that is stuffed into a warm pretzel roll and finished with chipotle Dijon mustard. Think of those big soft pretzels at Comerica Park, but put a burger in it. Yeah, it’s a great idea.
