We asked The Root’s Executive Chef James Rigato what kind of lemonade he suggests for Lemonade Day (and any nice summer day, of course). He recommends a refreshing blackberry lemonade using a home made syrup.
[Lemonade Day Detroit] The Root Blackberry Lemonade

- 1 pint Blackberries
- ½ Cup Sugar
- ½ Cup Water
- 3 ½ cups Lemon Juice
- 1 ½ cups Simple Syrup (equal parts white granulated sugar & water)
- 7 cups Water
- For the Blackberry Syrup (2 cups) - Combine the blackberries, sugar and water in a stove top pot. Cook on low to medium heat until soft. Puree with a stick blender. Strain through fine mesh sieve.
- For the Lemonade (3 quarts) - Muddle about 7 leaves per glass of mint, or to taste. Stir together the lemon juice, simple syrup and water. Mix together with the blackberry syrup in large pitcher. Leave mint in lemonade.
