Occasionally I get the urge to bake. I almost always have the urge to drink beer, so it seemed almost logical to bring the two together. A quick Google search brings up countless beer cake recipes. I gravitated toward Nigella …

I’ll be the first to admit that desserts bore me. My palate gravitates toward savory and spicy rather than sweet. A good dessert should have a salty, spicy, and/or savory component. Around Thanksgiving, apple season is dwindling, but there …

Today through Friday, we will feature a few of the desserts being offered during Detroit Restaurant Week, which starts this Friday April 1.
Our first sweet stop is Wolfgang Puck Grille for their decadent 12-layer Dobos Torte (by TheHungryDudes). Satisfyingly sweet yet not at all cloying, this is a balanced, lovely piece of cake.

Look for more pictures from my birthday eating adventures later this evening.

#348 Vegan Opera Cake (by TheHungryDudes)
Layers of hazelnut cake, mocha crème, raspberry, chocolate cake, vegan chocolate mousse and coconut almond frosting. Garnished with raspberry sauce and hot fudge.
I’m definitely not a vegan, but this is an amazing slice of cake. Moist, dense, full flavored. Delightfully complex.
From Inn Season Cafe in Royal Oak.

Nothing fancy about this cake. Moist, subtly sweet, and pleasantly tart. Locally produced Ray’s vanilla ice cream is on the side.
From Lockhart’s BBQ in Royal Oak.

We’ve covered Tres Leches before, but this version is very different. The berry component adds both brightness and flavor. The frosting is light & fluffy, a nice counterpart to the dense, moist cake.
From Rojo Mexican Bistro in Novi.
