220’s executive chef Luis Reyes always looks forward to The Garden Party. Situated in the heart of downtown Birmingham, 220 has been a staple of city for many years. Reyes has been there for nearly 2 decades with no sign of slowing down. The Garden Party is an opportunity to showcase Reyes’ culinary chops outside of Birmingham.
This year’s offering is a salad that is both summery and comforting – Shaved Brussels Sprout salad with Pecorino Toscano cheese, pine nuts, sultanas (golden raisins), chopped eggs, and a citrus honey vinaigrette. Think of really fantastic cole slaw with an exciting layering of flavors and textures. The pecorino is a great addition as it adds a bit of umami saltiness to the tart vinaigrette and the sweet sultanas.
The Garden Party is tomorrow! This annual event is a benefit for the Children’s Leukemia Foundation and the Oakland Community College Culinary Studies program. It’s an afternoon of food, wine, and classic cars.
