The Great Lakes Pizza Collection at Buddy’s Pizza

Buddy’s Pizza originated the Detroit deep dish pizza pie on Six Mile and Conant 66 years ago.  To celebrate their anniversary, they have joined forces with The Alliance for the Great Lakes, who are fully dedicated to the conservation and restoration of the five freshwater lakes surrounding our great state.

Buddy’s Pizza has created 5 new pizza’s that are sure to delight anyone looking for great new flavors to try.  As a way of bringing attention to The Alliance, Buddy’s is donating a proceed of the pizza sales from The Great Lakes Pizza Collection to aid in efforts that support the health of a Pure Michigan environment.

All 5 of the pizza creations feature Buddy’s original crust and the ‘Motor City Cheese Blend’, which consists of Fontinella, Asiago and brick cheeses.  The 5 pizzas have been named after The Great Lakes and each have their own unique offering.  Here is a tasty look:  (pizza photos supplied by Buddy’s Pizza)

Lake Huron:  Spinach and artichoke blend, roasted tomatoes, fresh asparagus

Lake Ontario:  Fresh cilantro, Canadian bacon, grilled pineapple, Buddy’s BBQ sauce

Lake Michigan:  Ground beef, caramelized onions, blue cheese, tomato basil sauce

Lake Erie:  Red onion, roasted red peppers, salami, pepperoncini, tomato basil sauce

Lake Superior:  Fresh basil, pine nuts, pepperoni, tomato basil sauce, Buddy’s spice blend

The announcement was given at The Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle and the location couldn’t have been a better fit with the new partnership between Buddy’s & The Alliance for the Great Lakes.

In chatting with Robert Jacobs, president of Buddy’s Pizza, (pictured above) he mentioned how much Buddy’s enjoys giving back and how they have been doing so for at least 30 years now.  The initiative behind The Great Lakes Pizza Collection is “to bring a higher awareness to the importance of the Great Lakes”.  They want The Great Lakes Pizza Collection to get everyone talking – and how could you not, when you place an order for a ‘Lake Huron’?

Before we sampled some of the new pizzas, we heard from representatives of The Dossin Great Lakes Museum and The Great Lakes Alliance.  Here are some cool facts about the Great Lakes & The Alliance:

• Did you know that The Great Lakes are 20% of the world’s surface fresh water supply?
• The Detroit River is one of the busiest waterways in the US.
• The Alliance was formed in 1970 and their mission is to: conserve and restore the world’s largest freshwater resource using policy, education and local efforts, ensuring a healthy Great Lakes and clean water for generations of people and wildlife.
